I’m Kay Umland, a surface pattern designer based in Southern California, where the ocean, wildlife, and open landscapes continually inspire my work.

With extensive experience in custom apparel design—primarily in silk-screened production—I bring a strong foundation in commercial art and repeat pattern development to everything I create. My work is rooted in geometry, rhythm, and structure, with particular emphasis on interlace design as a visual language for commercial and hospitality environments.

Through layered linework and disciplined over-under construction, I create patterns that balance precision with flow—designed to live within interior spaces as both atmosphere and structure. My collections move between bold statement designs and quieter supporting patterns, allowing flexibility across wallcoverings, textiles, and coordinated environments.

In addition to interlace, I explore botanical and illustrative motifs, blending hand-drawn detail with structured pattern systems to create work that feels both expressive and intentional.

When I’m not in the studio, you’ll find me watching waves, exploring tide pools, reading, or wandering in nature—always gathering inspiration for what comes next.
