I’m Kay Umland, a surface pattern designer based in Southern California,
where the ocean, wildlife, and open landscapes continually inspire my work.

I design coordinated surface pattern collections that bring rhythm, structure,
and atmosphere to interior environments. Rooted in geometric interlace, my
work explores how thoughtful pattern can shape the character of a space,
creating environments that feel balanced, welcoming, and visually connected.

Every collection is guided by my Human Wellbeing First Design philosophy.
I believe thoughtfully designed patterns can do more than decorate a surface—
they can shape how a space is experienced. Functional spaces deserve to be
beautiful, whether they are places where people live, work, heal, learn,
or gather. Through rhythm, structure, and atmosphere, I strive to create
collections that enrich everyday environments while supporting the people
 who use them.

With more than fifteen years of experience in custom apparel graphics and
production art, I bring a strong understanding of repeat design, color, and
commercial application to every collection. My signature work is built upon
geometric interlace, where disciplined over-under construction becomes a
visual language capable of expressing both architectural precision and
organic flow.

Each collection is developed as a coordinated system of hero designs,
supporting coordinates, and blenders that work together across
wallcoverings, upholstery, textiles, and other interior surfaces. While
interlace remains at the heart of my work, I also explore botanical, geometric,
and illustrative themes, always seeking the balance between structure,
rhythm, and atmosphere.

When I’m not in the studio, you’ll usually find me watching the waves,
exploring nature, reading, or gathering inspiration for the next collection—
because the best ideas often begin with simple curiosity.
